Sustainability

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015 by all United Nations Member States, sets out global priorities for 2030, bringing together efforts around 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These SDGs represent an urgent call to action for all countries, promoting global partnerships for a sustainable future. The UN monitors countries’ progress through the SDG Index & Monitoring.

Full implementation of the 2030 Agenda is essential for strengthening global resilience and preparing for future challenges as we advance the green and digital transitions. Portugal played an active role in developing and implementing this agenda and, in 2022, was recognised by the UN as one of the most sustainable countries in the world, reinforcing our collective responsibility.

UMinho is committed to contributing to these goals by developing interdisciplinary projects aligned with the SDG targets, as reflected in its strategic vision. Since 2009, UMinho has implemented sustainability policies documented in its Sustainability Reports, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the SDGs and global sustainable development.

Sustainability Reports

UMinho’s sustainability policy is set out in the UMinho 2020 Strategic Plan. It covers the institution’s administration, management and operations, educational activities, research activities, and the communication of its performance and impact, providing the basis for a holistic approach to sustainability. This vision is key to ensuring quality of life on campus, within the academic community and in the surrounding community.

Rankings

Participation in international sustainability rankings provides independent recognition of UMinho’s efforts to integrate environmental, social and governance principles into its activities. These benchmarks make it possible to assess the institution’s relative position, promote transparency and identify opportunities for improvement.
